It’s no lie to say that Dr. Polansky wrote the book on comprehensive exams—his book, The Art of the Examination is required reading for students at both Dawson Academy and the Pankey Institute for Continuing Education.
When Dr. Polansky performs an oral exam, several things are checked for. First, we’ll check for signs of decay using our DIAGNOdent laser. DIAGNOdent is a great tool that lets us spot decay early, when treatment will be more comfortable for patients and allow us to conserve more of tooth’s natural structure.
The next phase of your January oral exam will include a look at your gum tissue. Poor gum health has been tired not just to gum disease but also to a range of health issues in the rest of the body, including:
- Heat disease
- Diabetic complications
- Premature birth
After checking for decay and gum disease symptoms, Dr. Polansky will check to see how your teeth fit together, and for signs of TMJ dysfunction and bruxism, which can cause painful symptoms and seriously damage teeth.
And finally, we’ll finish your exam by checking for oral cancer. When found early, patients have a higher chance of completely recovering.
